ELM Database Management

ELM Enterprise Manager and ELM Event Log Monitor support Microsoft SQL Server 2008 including the Express version, Microsoft SQL Server 2005 including the Express version, and Microsoft SQL Server 2000. At least two databases are required; Primary Database and Failover Database. In large environments, it is recommended that the ELM Server and Primary Database be installed on separate systems. Also for data storage reliability, we recommend the Primary Database and Failover Databases be installed in different instances of SQL Server. Evaluation users can have both installed on the same instances to accelerate the time to value.

Optionally, Archive Databases can be configured to offload the Primary Database for efficient reporting and pruning to reduce storage costs.

Databases

Primary

The Primary Database is used by the ELM Server for storing data received from monitored systems. An insertion technology has been developed to store millions of events per day.

Failover

The ELM Server has built-in database protection mechanism to prevent data loss in the event the Primary Database or conductivity is unavailable. Once the ELM Server has confirmed the availability of the Primary Database, the temporary data in the Failover database will be merged.

Archive

The Archive Database is an optional database that can be used to minimize the size of the ELM Primary Database and improve the responsiveness of the ELM Console. Once the archives are created, the ELM Console can be connected to these historical databases for ad hoc reports or forensic investigation. There is also an automatic rollover option to limit database growth.

During Setup, a Wizard will launch for the creation of the database. In addition, event retention periods may be set (e.g., how long collected events remain in your database). By default, ELM is pre-configured at installation with the following data retention defaults:
